WAHOO!! I finally found out that out of the 19,000 applicants to be part of "new FamilySearch" Beta Two I am part of the 3,000 lucky people chosen to participate. I have been happily exploring the changes to "new FamilySearch" today.
The changes I have noticed so far:
1. Softer eye appealing colors
2. I don't see as many records that need to be combined as before. In beta 1 I had to combine/merge my four generations lines together is some sections. They were automatically there when I first signed on beta 2.
3. There is an option to view a family group sheet and print it. It will include the sources used. On the family group sheet you can click on the links and view more information on the individuals.
4. I noticed that I can see information on my living siblings and my husband's living siblings and parents. I don't know why I can see it, it wasn't available to view previously. I had to add it before. One possibility is that the program is actually linking me the user to my previous contributor information. I can see all the living information that I am able to view does show me as the contributor. I guess I'm just surprised to see it there because I understand that everything we added during beta 1 was tossed out. I had contributed this stuff previously to Ancestral File but beta 1 didn't recognize me as the same contributor.
5. There is a cool new option "Individual Map". It will show you a Google Map with markers of important event locations in the person's life. You can click on the marker and it will list all the events that happened there. I think this is major coolness and very helpful to my research.
6. There are a few names changes to options. The "Get to Know Me" button is now "Individual Time Line" and the "Just the Facts" button is now "Individual Details". I think the new wording is much clear.
7. You can no longer see "living" individuals ordinance information, not even your own.
The only problems I have had so far is when I was registering. It had my previous mailing address listed, not the one that should be on my membership record. I wasn't able to change it. I will have to ask my membership clerk if my records have the correct address. I moved in May 2006 and I requested my records changed and transferred. I know they read my records in the new ward. I just don't understand why the incorrect address is showing up. There is also a place for your phone number to show, but no where to enter it. I'm kind of wondering if it has something to do with the old address being the one I used when I submitted my records to Ancestral File?
I also noticed that myself and all my siblings are marked under "Personal Facts" as "Died before age eight: True". This is very incorrect. I think it has to do with my submission to Ancestral File. In the DOS version of Ancestral File you can see living individuals names and AFNs if you submitted members with their baptismal date. I did this with myself and all my siblings. I also did this with my children that were old enough and my husband but they don't have this note on their records. It's a mystery. At least this "Peronsal Fact" doesn't seem to be affecting my living status on my time line. So I guess I am still alive to the Church. I'll let you know if I get a notice back that I'm really dead by them. (hehe)
Well that's enough playing around for today.
See ya tomorrow, for tomorrow is always another genealogy day!

Another happy Beta 2 tester...
I'll second your WAHOO! I'm one of the lucky 3,000. I wasn't part of Beta 1 - so I'm especially happy to participate in this phase. I've been clicking and checking things out. Right now their feedback link isn't working. The main thing I noticed is that if I click the "Resolve Duplicate Spouses" (from the "See Other Spouses" icon - when I get to "Compare" it doesn't list the marriage date and location in the list of data. Since I'm comparing marriages to see if they are duplicated - the marriage date/location should be listed for comparison. Also not all the combine spouse or edit icons work at times they just loop me back to the same page. I have to move (for instance) a child I'm viewing to the main position before their edit icons seem to work. But over all - I'm very impressed. Looking forward to working with the new site more...I only have 5 weeks to play. Diane

Re: Another happy Beta 2 tester...
I am happy for you. I'm sure there are a lot of disappointed people out there. Make sure you send your feedback into the site - when it's working. My feedback options have been working just fine.February 19 2007, 05:02:28 UTC 5 years ago
Address
I was finally able to update my new address by going to the "Home" page and then "Update by User Profile". I made the suggestion to them to let us makes changes and get it right the first time.Anonymous

Forum Beta Testers
Were you also signed up as a beta tester in the Forums. I am signed up as a Forums tester and get e-mails every once in a while about the Forums, but have not had an e-mail for over a month. Do you know if the Forums testing has started or when it will?February 19 2007, 21:59:58 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Forum Beta Testers
Yes, I also signed up to be a beta tester for the forums. I thought the forum testing was to take place before the "new FamilySearch" beta 2 began. I can see the Help Center within "new FamilySearch" but it looks like the forums part is missing. I am not sure what is going on with the Forums right now. I'll let you know if I hear anything.Anonymous

Question
Does the system have a way to link original document Sources to individuals?RE: Death Certificate Images, Birth Record Images, Census Images etc.
Does the system allow linking Multimedia items?
RE: Photos, Family Histories, Web links etc.
Can you post some Screen Shots?

Re: Question
The option to link multimedia to events or individuals is not available yet. I understand that it will be available in a much later release. As for the screen shots. I will post some near the end of beta 2. The beta test is expected to last for 5 weeks.Anonymous

Ancestral File
They have included the Ancestral File data as part of your personal database but it tends to be read-only and is filled with problems such as "living" people entries plus a myriad of other errors. The excuse for including it in the new FamilySearch is that "it will find its way into the data anyways." If a person goes to the old/current Ancestral File database and imports or copies data into their database they they own their submission to the new FamilySearch. However, if the current Ancestral File database is incorporated into the new FamilySearch, it would seem that either a lot of submitters will have moved since 1983, will have died or just won't be interested. What will be the mechanism for data collaboration then if the submitter is "The Family History Department"?

Beta Testing for New Family Search
Is it really closed? or there is still a possibility that i will be invited for the Beta Test? Can you provide the link that will lead us to the Beta Test Survey? Thanks Alot.February 24 2007, 01:02:15 UTC 5 years ago
Re: Beta Testing for New Family Search
Since they already had 16,000 people they turned down to beta test I am sure there is no way to sign up to beta test.Anonymous

Re: Beta Testing for New Family Search
That is totally amazing. I have heard of several others getting their invitations to join this week. I would be really surprised given that we are in week 2 that they would accept anymore.Anonymous

Re: google map
I love the Google Map -- as long as the entries in the person's life are entered accurately. I have a lot of Norwegian ancestors showing up as birthplace in Norway, Minnesota, or on the west coast of Norway in Våstra instead of their town of Vestre Gausdal on the eastern part of the country. I believe these are a data import problem, and hope that they can fix it before it goes live.Maps are good for families "on the move" -- for families who stay put, they don't offer much more input. I would love it if they could pinpoint by address level -- to watch a family move around a city through the censuses.
I've been inputting my own mission areas, and my grandfather's WWII training camps and areas of service -- pretty nice to see.
